If your passport expiration date is approaching, the visa extension period will be limited to the remaining validity of your passport. For those in this situation, I strongly recommend renewing your U.S. passport first before applying for an F-4 visa or Residence Card extension.

Even if you are not planning to extend your visa immediately, if your passport has less than nine months of validity remaining, it is wise to apply for renewal in advance. This helps avoid problems in urgent travel situations.

Many countries require passports to be valid for at least six months for entry. For this reason, airlines may deny boarding if your passport has less than six months of remaining validity.

🔖Important Notes When Completing the U.S. Passport Renewal Application

There are several important points to keep in mind:

  • Double-sided printing is not allowed. The form must be printed single-sided only.

  • You must enter your Social Security Number (SSN).

If you do not remember your SSN, you must apply for a replacement Social Security card through the Social Security Administration’s regional office website based in Manila, Philippines. Once you receive the replacement card, you can then enter your SSN on the passport application.

  • Question 20 on the application asks for your travel date. This section must be completed. If you do not have any planned travel, you may write “None.”

How to Submit Your Passport Renewal Application

There are two submission methods:

1. In-Person Submission at the Embassy

For children under the age of 16, both parents must visit the U.S. Embassy together.

If only one parent can attend, you must prepare Form DS-3053, which must be notarized.

If you need assistance with:

  • Translation and notarization of basic certificates, or

  • Notarization of Form DS-3053

please feel free to contact me, and I will help ensure the process goes smoothly.

2. Submission by Courier (Mail-In Application)

Mail-in applications must be sent using a designated courier service and require round-trip courier delivery.

You can make a reservation through the official website or by calling the courier service’s call center.

  • Courier fee (sending): KRW 9,000

  • Courier fee (return, cash on delivery): KRW 9,000
