How Long Does the Process Take?
“I heard that in the past it was possible to register a Laos marriage in Korea first, but now I’m hearing that it’s no longer allowed. Do we have to register the marriage in Laos first?”
This is a question I recently received from a client regarding marriage registration for a Laos international marriage.
In this article, I will explain why registering the marriage in Korea first can be problematic, as well as the role of single-status certificates, the Laos marriage registration process, and the preparation steps for the F-6 marriage visa.
In the past, many couples chose to register their marriage in Korea first.
The reason was simple, marriage registration in Laos is notoriously time-consuming. The process often takes at least three months, and in many cases six months or longer, with some cases taking up to a full year.
Because newly married couples often found it difficult to wait that long, those residing in Korea would first register the marriage in Korea and then invite their spouse to live together in Korea.
This option, however, was only available to couples living in Korea and did not apply to those residing in Laos.
The major issue with this approach is that once the marriage is registered in Korea first, it becomes impossible to register the marriage in Laos afterward.
Generally, international marriage registration works as follows: once a marriage is registered in one country and an official marriage certificate is issued, that document is notarized and authenticated, then submitted to the other country to complete marriage registration there. Korea also follows this system, allowing marriage registration abroad using a Korean marriage certificate, often through an embassy.
However, Laos does not accept this process.
Laos requires that the marriage must be registered in Laos first. If the marriage is registered in Korea first, Laos will not recognize it, making marriage registration in Laos impossible.
Despite this disadvantage, many couples still chose Korean first registration in the past because they wanted to bring the bride to Korea as quickly as possible and begin living together.
Recently, however, this approach has become increasingly difficult.
The main reason is the single-status certificate required for marriage registration in Korea.
Korea does not issue an official document called a “single-status certificate.” Instead, marital status is confirmed through a detailed Certificate of Marriage Registration. While this document is sufficient domestically, many foreign countries require a separate, officially issued single-status certificate.
To register a marriage in Korea, a single-status certificate for the Lao spouse is required.
Currently, however, Laos does not issue single-status certificates, making it difficult to proceed with marriage registration in Korea first.
As a result, the most realistic option now is to complete marriage registration in Laos first.
Although the Laos marriage registration process takes time, once completed, Laos issues documentation equivalent to a single-status certificate. With this document, couples can then proceed to invite the spouse to Korea.
So, what is the first step if you plan to register your marriage in Laos?
1️⃣ According to embassy guidelines, approximately 13 documents are required from the groom and 4 documents from the bride, totaling nearly 20 documents.
All documents must be:
1. Translated
2. Notarized
3. Authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
4. Finally authenticated by the Embassy of Laos in Korea
This preparation process usually takes one to two weeks. After submission to the Lao Embassy, documents are typically issued within about a week. Including translation and notarization, two weeks is generally sufficient for preparation.
2️⃣ Once document preparation is complete, you will travel to Laos with the documents.
There, the process involves multiple steps, including reporting to the village chief, visiting the police station, city office, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Justice, and other government institutions.
3️⃣ After completing approximately 8 to 9 administrative steps, the marriage is officially registered and a marriage certificate is issued.
In the past, couples would then register the marriage in Korea through the embassy using the Lao marriage certificate. However, this method is no longer used.
Currently:
No. To apply for an F-6 marriage visa, marriage registration in Korea alone is sufficient.
This is why many couples previously attempted to complete Korean marriage registration first using a single-status certificate. However, due to current limitations, this approach has become increasingly difficult.
The Laos marriage registration process can sometimes be completed relatively quickly, but in many cases it takes up to six months.
Some couples proceed through local agents, while others handle the process directly with the help of their spouse. Since the cost difference is not significant and the process is highly complex, using a local agent familiar with government procedures is often recommended.
Because of the complexity and physical burden of the process, working with an experienced local agent generally makes the process smoother.
In most cases, couples choose to enter Korea with a formal F-6 marriage visa rather than short-term stay options.
When preparing for the F-6 visa, it is essential to carefully review:
If these requirements are met and documents are properly prepared, the spouse can enter Korea and reside legally.
