Many people think that completing the nationality reinstatement process marks the end of all procedures.

However, what’s more important is the series of administrative tasks that must be completed immediately afterward.

Below is a summary of key steps you must take after restoring your Korean nationality.

Five Mandatory Procedures After Nationality Reinstatement

1. Submission of the Pledge Not to Exercise Foreign Nationality

After receiving approval for nationality reinstatement,

you must submit a Pledge Not to Exercise Foreign Nationality or formally choose to retain Korean nationality within one year of the approval date.

🔖Form: Available for download at Hi Korea

🔖Where to submit: Immigration Office

❗️Required documents: Passport and 1 photo

⚠️ If you fail to submit this pledge within the one-year period, your Korean nationality will be revoked.

⚠️ After signing this pledge, you must use your Korean passport when departing Korea.

2. Re-registration of Resident Registration

This is the first step you must take after regaining Korean nationality. Resident registration is essential for living in Korea and accessing administrative services.

Where to apply: Local community center (Eup/Myeon/Dong office)

🔖Required documents:

✔Confirmation of Pledge Not to Exercise Foreign Nationality

✔Alien Registration Card (ARC) or residence card

❗️ Once registered, you will receive a new Resident Registration Number (RRN), which will be used for all subsequent processes.

❗️ You must return your ARC to the immigration office within 30 days of completing resident registration, or you may be fined.

3. Apply for a Korean Passport

After registering as a resident, you can apply for a new Korean passport as a Korean citizen.

Where to apply: Local district office passport department or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Passport Office

🔖Required documents:

✔Resident registration card or issuance confirmation

✔Passport photo

✔Application fee

4. Register for Health Insurance & the Four Major Social Insurances

Upon gaining Korean nationality, you will automatically be enrolled in the National Health Insurance system once your resident registration is complete.

🔖 For example, if you register on June 1, your health insurance coverage will begin the same day.

🔖 Premiums are calculated based on your personal information; the minimum rate applies if you have no income or assets.

🔖 If employed or affiliated with a company, you will also automatically be enrolled in the Four Major Insurances:

✔National Pension

✔Health Insurance

✔Employment Insurance

✔Industrial Accident Compensation Insurance

❗️ If you're self-employed or a freelancer,

you must register separately as a local subscriber for National Pension and Health Insurance.

(Employment and accident insurances are not applicable.)

5. Tax Obligations

Once you regain Korean nationality, you are regarded as a tax resident of Korea and must comply with various tax obligations, such as:

✔Comprehensive income tax

✔Property tax

✔Local taxes

❗️ Tax notices will be issued automatically.

❗️ If you have overseas income, foreign assets, or receive foreign remittances,

you may be required to report overseas income separately. Failure to do so may result in penalties.
